What is Reiki?
Reiki is a gentle, holistic healing practice that works with energy. It’s based on the idea that a Universal Life Force Energy flows through all of us, and when that energy is balanced, we feel healthier and more at ease—physically, emotionally, and mentally.
Universal Life Force Energy is the vital energy that flows through all living things and connects everything in the universe. You can think of it as the invisible force that makes plants grow, keeps your heart beating, and gives you that spark of life. Different cultures and traditions have their own names for it—like 'chi' in Chinese medicine, 'prana' in yoga, or 'ki' in Japanese practices like Reiki.
Have you ever entered a room and felt an overwhelming sense of tension, almost as if you could physically feel it in the air? Or perhaps you’ve instinctively placed your hand on a sore spot—whether your own or your child’s—seeking comfort or relief without even thinking about it. These moments highlight how deeply attuned we are to energy, whether it’s the emotional energy of a space or the natural healing energy we channel through touch.
This energy isn’t something we see, but we can feel its effects when it’s balanced—it supports health, vitality, and emotional well-being.
It’s a subtle but profound reminder of our intuitive connection to the energy that surrounds and flows through us.
Prolonged exposure to stress, illness, and environmental toxins can disrupt the flow of energy in your body, and over time, the flow of energy can become blocked or impeded often manifesting as fatigue, mental fog, or physical illness.
How does it work?
A Reiki Practitioner is not a healer in the traditional sense, but rather a channel for energy. Through attunement from a Reiki Master, the practitioner acts as a conduit, facilitating the flow of healing energy to align with the intentions of the person seeking healing.
Reiki practitioners can act as conduits for healing energy because they have undergone a process called attunement or initiation from a qualified Reiki Master. This attunement is a key part of Reiki training and is what sets practitioners apart. Here's why:
1. Attunement Opens the Energy Channels: During the attunement process, a Reiki Master tunes the practitioner's energy system to connect with the universal life force energy. This alignment allows the practitioner to channel energy more effectively and in a balanced, intentional way.
2. Focus and Intention: Practitioners are trained to work with energy consciously, ensuring it flows for the highest good without interference from personal emotions or biases. This training cultivates the practitioner's ability to act as a clear and neutral vessel.
3. Energetic Responsibility: Practitioners are taught how to ground themselves, maintain their own energetic boundaries, and channel energy safely. This ensures the recipient receives pure, undistorted energy.
4. Ethical Practice: Reiki practitioners follow specific principles and ethics, ensuring they approach each session with respect, consent, and non-judgment. This helps create a safe and intentional healing environment.
While anyone can offer comfort and support through touch or presence, Reiki Practitioners have the specialised training and energetic alignment that allows them to consciously and effectively channel healing energy.
Reiki works to restore this balance by transferring healing energy from one person to another. In a Reiki session, the Reiki Practitioner offers healing with intention, while the other is open to receiving it. It’s a two-way process—a partnership that’s vital for the session’s success.
The human energy system traditionally has seven main chakras, which are the focus during most Reiki sessions. These are:
Root Chakra (Muladhara) – Base of the spine, associated with grounding and security.
Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana) – Lower abdomen, connected to creativity, emotions, and sexuality.
Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura) – Upper abdomen, linked to personal power, confidence, and willpower.
Heart Chakra (Anahata) – Centre of the chest, related to love, compassion, and emotional balance.
Throat Chakra (Vishuddha) – Throat area, associated with communication and self-expression.
Third Eye Chakra (Ajna) – Forehead between the eyes, connected to intuition and insight.
Crown Chakra (Sahasrara) – Top of the head, representing connection to spirituality and higher consciousness.
In Reiki, Cheryl typically focuses on these seven chakras but may also work on other energy points or areas of the body guided intuitively.
Beyond the seven main chakras, some systems recognise additional minor chakras and energy centres, such as the hands, feet, and higher spiritual chakras (like the Soul Star above the Crown Chakra), but these are less commonly addressed in standard Reiki sessions unless specified.
